“BLANK” Makes Me Happy with Laurie London

Hello again, my lovely book people. For today’s “BLANK” Makes Me Happy feature we get to chat a bit with Sweetblood Series author, Laurie London! I really, really enjoy the way she’s telling her vampire story, and hope you all have either read Bonded by Blood, or have it on your TBR list. Trust me, it’s a debut that will grab you, and a series you don’t want to miss! (You can read my review of Bonded by Blood HERE.)

Here’s a little list Laurie gave of things that are making her smile these days…

  • The way my horse smells when I press my nose to her neck
  • Roasted marshmallows that are golden, not black
  • Khal on A Game of Thrones
  • Turning over my PTA binders to the person taking over the job next year
  • Sitting in a cafe at a bookstore
  • Salt caramels
  • Waking up early before anyone else
  • Having my dog lay on my feet as I write
  • The sound of my husband’s laugh
  • Watching a hummingbird feed from my fuchsia

Laurie will be popping in and out today to answer questions about herself, and her series. One random commenter/questioner will win an AUTOGRAPHED copy of book 2 in the Sweetblood Series, Embraced by Blood!! And I’m also going to throw in a custom, Sweetblood inspired book-thong, created by Mandy at Stupid Shiny Designs!

To kick off the questioning… here are a few things I’d like to know…

1) Did you read the Song of Fire and Ice series before the show started? If not, do you plan on reading them?

2)  What’s the hardest part of a story to write for you? The beginning, the end, the romance, the action scenes? How do you get through those parts?

3) How many books do you envision for this series? I can think of at least three stories that can come from the information we were given in Bonded by Blood. Obviously book two is done… how much further do you plan to go with these characters?

Ok… that’s my start… I’m sure I’ll have more questions  before the end of the day, lol. What do YOU want to know??

  1. Comment by Donna/BLHmistress:

Let me say I just loved this series will we get to see more of Finn ? I am curious what you have planned for Jackson any hints?? you can give us ??

  2. Comment by acm05:

Congrats on all the great reviews I’ve been seeing online for Bonded by Blood.

I have the same question about the number of books planned for the series.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only person who sniffs their pets. I’ve had a couple of cats who have smelled so wonderful, I wished I could bottle the scent. Then I’ve had some who’ve had almost no scent (and there’s Alex, aka Mr. Stinky, who rolls in anything unpleasant and wants to be cuddled ALL THE TIME).

  3. Comment by Laurie London:

Hi Jennifer! Thanks for having me on today! I’ve had such a fun time chatting with you on Twitter. We seem to be on at the same time a lot.

    Okay, as to your questions:

    1. No, I haven’t read A Song of Fire and Ice yet, but I have it on my Nook and can’t wait to dig in.
    2. The hardest part of a story is probably the beginning. I usually know how the story is going to end–the climactic scene and the black moment when all seems lost. But the beginning can be tricky. It’s like starting a lawnmower for the first time in the summer. You start it, it stops. You start it again, it stops again. You fiddle with a few settings and try again. It still stops. But if you keep going, eventually–if you haven’t flooded it–the engine roars to life.
    3. I’m contracted for two more stories, but would love to write more. Tempted By Blood (Jackson’s story) will be coming out in February. The fourth book is Santiago’s and it’s coming out next year as well. I’m dying to write Kip’s story–you’ll meet him in Embraced as well as Mitch’s.

Thanks, Donna! So glad you’re enjoying the series. Yes, you’ll see more of Finn. I don’t think he’d have it any other way! I had such a great time writing his and Brenna’s story in Hidden By Blood. He surprised me many times. LOL Regarding Jackson, I’m writing Tempted By Blood as we speak. 🙂 So, yes, you’ll get to see A LOT of him.

  4. Comment by Donna/BLHmistress:

OH yea I enjoyed Finn and Brenna too just wish it could been a longer book 🙁 , As much as I love Dom and Alfonso which I can’t choose between Jackson is who I can’t wait for . Was he as much fun to write as he was to read? ooooooooh Santiago is getting a book yes I love him too.

  5. Comment by Wendy:

I have to say I love your books and I look forward to the next one.

  6. Comment by Mariee:

I can’t wait to read Embrace by Blood. LOVE the cover!

What inspired you to write your first book?

  7. Comment by Laurie London:

Thanks, ACM05. My dog JUST rolled in something stinky, too! No, I will not be pressing my nose to her neck until she gets a bath. LOL

Donna, I wish the story could’ve been longer, too. 15k words was the max it could be and I even went over that a little bit. So glad you’re looking forward to Jackson. Yes, he’s VERY fun to write about.

    Thanks, Wendy!

Thanks, Mariee! I love the cover too. What inspired me to write Bonded By Blood? I’ve always loved vampire stories, but to tell you the truth, it was when my sister became a finalist in the Golden Heart contest, a national writing contest for romance writers, that really spurred me on. She needed me to attend the national conference with her. I decided I couldn’t go unless I’d finished writing a romance manuscript, so I wrote the kind of story I love to read and finished Bonded the day before we jumped on the plane.

  8. Comment by Jennifer:

OK… so… I just finished Hidden by Blood (the novella between Bonded by Blood and Embraced by Blood) and HELLO FINN!! 🙂

Tonight… I’ll be starting Embraced… can’t WAIT for that story!!!! I have some theories… and if I’m right… this is gonna get INTERESTING, lol!!

I have another question for Laurie… what was the last book you read and really loved. Also… what book do you automatically recommend when people ask you “what should I read”? I ask because today I bought 2 more copies of Sarah Addison Allen’s Garden Spells. I have given this book SO MANY TIMES. Pretty soon, everyone I know will own a copy, lol. So… what is your “Garden Spells”?

  9. Comment by Laurie London:

So glad you’re enjoying the series, Jennifer!

Ooh, I’ve never heard of Garden Spells. With that endorsement, I’ll totally have to check it out.

One of the last books that I read and loved was Virginia Kantra’s Immortal Sea. It’s the third or fourth book in the Children of the Sea series, but I didn’t know that. I bought it because I’d read a short story of hers in the anthology Burning Up, and loved her writing style. I’ve since gone back and bought the others in the series.

My “Garden Spells” type book would have to be The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. LOVE his gorgeous, lush writing style. I clutch it to my chest and close my eyes to let the words sink in, it’s that amazing. 🙂

I”m so not a morning person! I envy how u can be up before anyone else … & savoring it. But then my fav time to read is at nite when it’s cool & quiet. I live in the tropics & it can be really hot during the day.

  11. Comment by Micaela A:

    * waves* Hi Laurie,
This Series couldn’t be Sweeter in a sexy hot way…. I love all the characters but i can’t wait for Jacksons Book…. Lily and Alfono … sight… and the Novella you gave us as a treat before Embraced by Blood comes out was just Yummy…. I’m Glad Lily was in it she kicks ass…. i got my nails did today with Lily in mind…. red tips look HOT….
Q: What Inspired you to write Lily?

  12. Comment by Mary Preston:

I love the list of things that make you smile. Mine would be more mundane: an empty ironing basket, potatoes on special at the market, bean shoots peaking up through the soil. I really must get out more, or maybe just read more.

  13. Comment by Laurie London:

You did red tips like Lily??? That is so cool. I’d love to see a pic. Can you take one and post it on my FB page? The permissions are such that you should be able to do that. 🙂

  14. Comment by Laurie London:

Hahaha Mary, that first one TOTALLY makes me smile. Especially since I’m looking at 2 laundry baskets of clothes that my daughter hasn’t folded yet. (She cleaned her room, which means the laundry room gets piled high.)

  15. Comment by jgriffin1018:

I love to smell my animals lol! As long as they haven’t been rolling around outside of course. 🙂

I haven’t read your books yet, but they sound interesting! I’ve sent the first one to my Kindle as a sample. (That’s how I make my TBR list haha.)

I haven’t read Game of Thrones yet either. Watching the show has made me want to though!

  16. Comment by Mandy Maschka:

Laurie!!! Your list is wonderful! I love the way horses smell and being up before everyone in the house is the only way I ever getting any writing done. You know me, one interruption and it kicks me right out of writing mode.

I read Game of Thrones last year and loved it so much, I went out and bought the next three books in the series. Alas, with all the books in my TBR pile, I haven’t gotten to back to them yet.

I loved Bonded, Hidden and Embraced by Blood, but did you mention Enchanted by Blood? If so, I didn’t see it. And what a Christmas gift that will be!!
