Blog Tour – Q&A & Giveaway with Jennifer Estep

Posted August 23, 2012 By Jennifer

Have you seen it? Have you bought it? It’s out… IT’S OUT!!!!

I used to murder people for money, but these days it’s more of a survival technique.

Once an assassin, always an assassin. So much for being plain old Gin Blanco. With every lowlife in Ashland gunning for me, I don’t need another problem, but a new one has come to town. Salina might seem like a sweet Southern belle, but she’s really a dangerous enemy whose water elemental magic can go head-to-head with my own Ice and Stone power. Salina also has an intimate history with my lover, Owen Grayson, and now that she’s back in town, she thinks he’s hers for the taking. Salina’s playing a mysterious game that involves a shady local casino owner with a surprising connection to Owen. But they call me the Spider for a reason. I’m going to untangle her deadly scheme, even if it leaves my love affair hanging by a thread.

Today we have the Elemental Asssassins series author, Jennifer Estep joining us for a spot along her blog tour for book 7, WIDOW’S WEB. She’s been dropping off excerpts and snippets at various spots along the tour, so if you want a sneak peak… be sure to check out some of the other blogs participating. You can also check out chapter one of WIDOW’S WEB on Jennifer’s site here.

For our part on the tour… Jennifer answered a few questions about writing, and about fun stuff in general. HUGE thanks to her for taking some time away from the crazy of release day (which was the 21st).

1) When you write, do you prefer quiet, or do you listen to music? If you like music playing, what is your preferred genre? Do certain characters have their own personal “soundtrack”?

JE: I prefer quiet when I write. I just find that I can concentrate better and get more done if it’s quiet in my office. I like music, but I never think I know enough about it to do soundtracks for my characters. I’ve done a few soundtracks for my books, but they always end up being lists of songs that I like more than anything else.

2) Where do you write? In an office, at the dining room table, at a local coffeeshop? Do you prefer to write alone or with a group? If you write with a group, do you also read/critique each other’s work?

JE: I write in my office. Boring, I know, but that’s what works for me. I prefer to write alone. However, I do have a local book group. We meet once a month and talk about what we’re working on, what we’re reading, and things like that. Sometimes, we critique each other’s work if someone wants some feedback on a project.

 3) How do you prepare for release day? Are you calm and focused, or do you get stressed? Do you like to make promotional appearances or stay at home to watch lists and numbers?

JE: I usually do a guest blog or two on release day, and I’m definitely on the computer a lot that day, just seeing what folks are saying about the book and responding to e-mails and other comments. You always hope that folks enjoy the latest book as much as they have the other ones, especially if you’re writing a series, so I do stress about that a little bit. I also tend to check my online sales rankings. But overall, I’m just glad that the book is finally out there for folks to read and hopefully enjoy.

4) What was your favorite Halloween costume (or other costume party costume)?

JE: From what I remember, I dressed up in the same black witch’s hat and cape every year. But I was always more interested in the candy anyway. LOL.

5) If you could go anywhere on vacation (and not interfere with your deadlines), where would you go, and what 3 items (besides food and clothes) would you bring with you?

JE: I would go to Alaska. I would take sunscreen, bug spray, and my camera so I could take lots of pictures

6) What song best describes your life? If you can’t think of one, who would you want to write/perform a song just for you?

JE: I’m a big Jimmy Buffett fan, so I think it would be really cool if he wrote a fun, upbeat song for me.

7) If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would be it and what would you do all day?

JE: I think it would be fun to spend the day with Gin Blanco, the assassin the Spider from my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. We could hang out at the Pork Pit, her barbecue restaurant, and I could meet all of her friends and family.

8) What world record would you love to set for the Guinness Book of World Records? (Remember, they take ALL KINDS of interesting talents into account. Some world records include *fastest 100m sprint, barefoot, on ice = 17.35 secs… *fastest pumpkin carving of a face = 24.03 secs… *longest distance pogo stick jumping = 23.11 miles)

JE: I think it would be cool to set the world record for the most amount of words typed in one day or the book written in the shortest amount of time. Either one of those things would definitely help me out with my writing schedule and deadlines. LOL.

9) If you could have one word removed from the English language, from all dictionaries and out of everyone’s vocabulary, what would it be, and why? If you could ADD one word, what would it be?

JE: I would remove the word worry. I know I spend way too much time worrying about things, and I bet that other people do too. So I would remove it so maybe we could all maybe have a little less worry and stress in our lives. I would add the word perseverance. I think you can achieve anything that you set your mind to, as long as you keep working toward your goal.

10) What is one thing about you that your friends know and you would love your readers to know as well. Or… if you’re in a giving mood… what is one story that your friends LOVE to talk you into telling that you don’t generally volunteer?

JE: I have a weakness for junk food. Potato chips, french fries, strawberry cheesecake ice cream, cookies, brownies. I like them all.

Congratulations on all your successes, and good luck with all you have planned for the future!

JE: Thanks for hosting me on the blog. I appreciate it. Happy reading, everyone!

Posted August 20, 2012 By Jennifer

I can’t even tell you how excited I am to be sharing this cover. The book is going to be awesome… Lea Nolan is so sweet… and just LOOK at the beautiful cover the folks at Entangled have come up with…

I love love love the eerie, midnight blues.  The story sounds really fun… here’s the blurb from Entangled…

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry–hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

When a strange girl appears, bent on revenge; demon dogs become a threat; and Jack turns into a walking skeleton; Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer—and her friends–are lost forever.

I love love love, did I mention I LOVE Shannon K Butcher’s writing. I’m a HUGE fan of her Sentinel Wars series, and if you haven’t been reading them, you definitely need to get on that!! 🙂 Today Shannon’s entering a whole new world. FORGET ME NOT is the ebook introduction to a whole new story, and I’m SO excited to see what amazing new things she’s got planned.

The last thing Adria expects to find when she arrives at her vacation rental is a man in her front yard—unconscious and stark naked. But something else sets him apart from most strangers. He is no ordinary man. Toren is new to Earth, framed for a crime he didn’t commit and banished to this planet to serve his sentence. He’s desperate to return to his planet, because the magic that is part of him will soon disappear, and along with it, all of his memories. Adria is his only hope to help make his escape for home—and as fate would have it, his reason to stay.

You can find FORGET ME NOT at all your favorite ebook retailers today!!! (Perfect flight material for your trip to Authors After Dark! Or, a nice way to spend the time if you’re not on your way to New Orleans.)

To help celebrate the new release, we’re gonna give someone a shot at an autographed copy of one of Shannon’s backlist titles! If you haven’t started the Sentinel Wars series yet, here’s your chance. If you’re not caught up with the Edge series, now’s the time. AND… Shannon is also including a handmade (yes, by her) glass bead bookmark!!

So… let’s predict… does Toren stay? Does he find a way home with Adria? Or do we have to wait for book 2 to find out??? One commenter will be randomly chosen Monday night (8/13) at midnight pacific. GOOD LUCK!!

Q&A with Kira Brady

Posted August 6, 2012 By Jennifer

I’m so excited to bring you this Q&A. If you haven’t stepped into Deadglass world Seattle, you’re missing out. There has been one novella (HEARTS OF FIRE) to introduce us to the shifter races and history, and the first full novel in the series (HEARTS OF DARKNESS) releases TOMORROW!!! In honor of her debut, and as a part of her first blog tour, here’s a little about the author of the Deadglass Trilogy, Kira Brady. AND… in this post, we get a bit of Words & Music Monday, as well… as Kira shares a few of the songs that inspired some of her writing so far.

1)     When you write, do you prefer quiet, or do you listen to music? If you like music playing, what is your preferred genre? Do certain characters have their own personal “soundtrack”?

I think I wrote most of Hearts of Darkness listening to Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Moby, and other bands that put me in a dark, anxty headspace. Hart’s songs were Uprising by Muse and Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins. The short playlist for the book also had Nirvana’s Lake of Fire and some other 90s Seattle Grunge. Kayla’s more of an Adele and Feist sort of girl. These days I don’t listen to much music when I’m putting words on the page because the lyrics are distracting.

2)     Where do you write? In an office, at the dining room table, at a local coffeeshop? Do you prefer to write alone or with a group? If you write with a group, do you also read/critique each other’s work?

I have a home office where I do most of my writing, though I sometimes move my laptop to other places in the house to get a change of scenery. I used to meet my critique partner at Essential Bakery to write, but she just moved to California. *sob* We’ve been working together since I first started writing and our process has evolved. We’re pretty good friends, so we understand where the other person is coming from and what help they need. It’s so relaxing to plot with someone who understands me without me having to explain too much! We’ve started plotting/brainstorming together and then exchanging pages after a good chunk of the book is written to make sure we’re still on track. I also have her read my work when I’m finished before I send it to my editor. I love working with her. We also celebrate our successes with afternoon tea.

3)     How do you prepare for release day? Are you calm and focused, or do you get stressed? Do you like to make promotional appearances or stay at home to watch lists and numbers?

Tuesday is my very first release day! I feel a little behind on everything, so I’m frantically trying to write blog posts and get food together for my launch party on Friday. I probably won’t have any time to sit in front of my computer and watch numbers. That would make me crazy anyway. I’m a firm believer in the idea that writing the best book I can write is the best marketing I can do. Then write another one. I’m excited for my launch party though. It’s at the local bookstore where I’ve shopped since I was little. They’ve already decorated a whole window with my books!

4)     What was your favorite Halloween costume (or other costume party costume)?

Halloween was always my favorite holiday because it involved costumes. I was Peter Pan for many years, and once dressed up all the kids on my block as characters from the book for the Wallingford Kiddies Parade. We won third place! There have been a lot of great Halloween costumes; I provided artistic direction and my mother magically sewed them. The best was probably the year my cousin and I were a two-headed monster.

5)     If you could go anywhere on vacation (and not interfere with your deadlines), where would you go, and what 3 items (besides food and clothes) would you bring with you?

Wait, vacation shouldn’t interfere with deadlines?? 😛 I actually just returned from an awesome four week trip to Europe that included Edinburgh, the Isle of Skye, Brussels, Paris, and Chamonix. Now that I’ve done Europe, I’d like to hike the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. I’d have to bring a camera, a journal, and my kindle (assuming this time it doesn’t break as soon as I arrive on vacation!).

6)     What song best describes your life? If you can’t think of one, who would you want to write/perform a song just for you?

I’m going to have to go with “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella.

7)     If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would be it and what would you do all day?

Grace Mercer, the mercenary zombie hunter. I’d make her teach me to fight. I’ve always wanted to learn.

Fastest knitted lace sweater. I love to knit, but it takes so long to finish anything.

9)     If you could have one word removed from the English language, from all dictionaries and out of everyone’s vocabulary, what would it be, and why? If you could ADD one word, what would it be?

Slut. It’s demeaning to women. I’d add Deadglass = a device allowing the user to see beyond the mundane into the possible.

10)  What is one thing about you that your friends know and you would love your readers to know as well. Or… if you’re in a giving mood… what is one story that your friends LOVE to talk you into telling that you don’t generally volunteer?

I can kick your ass in Disney Trivia. Mr Kira beat me once. Reader, I married him.

****SO… who wants to give Kira a run for her money??? Comment below for a chance to win a copy of the Deadglass prequel novella HEARTS OF FIRE (ebook format). Anyone who’s comment is a Disney trivia question gets a second entry into the drawing!!**** Contest ends tomorrow night, Tuesday, at midnight pacific. Winner will be chosen randomly from all entries. Good luck!!!
