Q&A (AND Contest) with Hildie McQueen

Posted October 5, 2012 By Jennifer

Hi there!!! I’m so excited to have Hildie McQueen on the blog today!!! I met her at Authors After Dark this year in New Orleans, and she was a total blast. I know you’ll all enjoy having her here today as much as I do. OH!!! And stick around, because at the bottom of this post is YET ANOTHER way to enter to win a free registration to Olde City, New Blood in February (where Hildie will be a Featured Author!!).

1) When you write, do you prefer quiet, or do you listen to music? If you like music playing, what is your preferred genre? Do certain characters have their own personal “soundtrack”?

I write with the radio playing in the background. Usually I leave it on new country. I love listening to a cowboy’s deep voice as I tap away on my laptop, which works perfectly for the historical westerns I’m currently working on. When I work on the Protector novels, I tend to lean more towards soft rock.

2) Where do you write? In an office, at the dining room table, at a local coffeeshop? Do you prefer to write alone or with a group? If you write with a group, do you also read/critique each other’s work?

I just turned a room off the living room into my office, but I don’t have a desk. Instead I bought an oval table. I love it. I’m a lone ranger; I don’t belong to a group but do have a couple of critique partners.

3) How do you prepare for release day? Are you calm and focused, or do you get stressed? Do you like to make promotional appearances or stay at home to watch lists and numbers?

This is funny, for my last three books, I kinda just winged it. I freaked out when my first book came out, since I was in Scotland at the time. For my upcoming release, Where The Four Winds Collide, which comes out in January 2013, I’m doing all kinds of planning for doing a bunch of appearances and ads. I plan to be calm and focused. We’ll see how that goes. I don’t watch or read numbers, now that stresses me out. (ha ha)

4) What was your favorite Halloween costume (or other costume party costume)?

Once I dressed as a guy, I was a bit too believable because a girl hit on me. That was strange.

5) If you could go anywhere on vacation (and not interfere with your deadlines), where would you go, and what 3 items (besides food and clothes) would you bring with you?

Definitely back to Scotland, I fell head over heels in love with the country, the people and the food. There’s so much I haven’t seen yet. I would take my camera, my journal and my husband.

6) What song best describes your life? If you can’t think of one, who would you want to write/perform a song just for you?

Time of Your Life by Green Day, because it’s true, have to make the best of each day in this unpredictable life.

7) If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would be it and what would you do all day?

Wow, now this is a good question, I’m smiling trying to pick one. All right, I think I choose Protector Cyn Fraser. He’s easy going and a hunk to boot. We’d go on a motorcycle ride all over Georgia. That way I could hold on to that solid bod for a bit. I wouldn’t wear a tank top, you’ll understand why later on.

8) What world record would you love to set for the Guinness Book of World Records? (Remember, they take ALL KINDS of interesting talents into account. Some world records include *fastest 100m sprint, barefoot, on ice = 17.35 secs… *fastest pumpkin carving of a face = 24.03 secs… *longest distance pogo stick jumping = 23.11 miles)

Hildie McQueen holds the record for the “longest and most extensive shopping trip…ever!” That would be the entry.

9) If you could have one word removed from the English language, from all dictionaries and out of everyone’s vocabulary, what would it be, and why? If you could ADD one word, what would it be?

I’d remove “Buttocks”, that’s a silly word and I can’t pronounce it. I wanted add “Wonky” I love that word, but it’s already there, so I’m happy!

10) What is one thing about you that your friends know and you would love your readers to know as well. Or… if you’re in a giving mood… what is one story that your friends LOVE to talk you into telling that you don’t generally volunteer?

My friends love the story of my first long motorcycle ride on my husband’s Goldwing. I wore a tank top and it shifted, my boobs were flapping in the wind, truckers were honking and my hubby was waving back, thinking they loved his new bike. I didn’t know it because the wind hitting so hard felt like fabric to me. The worst part…we were riding behind my boss and his wife. Yeah, that story has been retold many, many times.

Circus Fun (AND a Contest) with Delilah S Dawson

Posted October 3, 2012 By Jennifer

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, have we got a special treat for you today!! Delilah S Dawson is stopping by to help us start our very own (even if it is only here in our little corner of the cyberworld) CIRCUS!! To help celebrate the release of THE MYSTERIOUS MADAM MORPHO (the novella followup to WICKED AS THEY COME) we’ll be giving one lucky circus performer an ebook copy! And since Delilah will be attending Olde City, New Blood in Florida this coming February, I’m also including another chance to WIN YOUR WAY IN to the mini-con for FREE. See below for details on both contests 🙂

And now… on to the show!!

Taking place after Wicked as They Come, this original eBook features a mysterious lady and a reclusive mechanical genius who find love and danger in a traveling circus. An elusive woman arrives at Criminy’s doorstep with a steamer trunk, begging for a position in the caravan to perform her unique new act. She opens her trunk to reveal a menagerie of brilliantly colored butterflies. The woman, who calls herself Madam Morpho, is on the run from a dark past in London, where she was forced to leave her equipment behind and abscond with only her tiny performers. Playing a hunch, Criminy hires Madam Morpho on the spot. Taking her down to meet Mr. Murdoch, the reclusive talented engineer who keeps the carnival’s clockworks running, Criminy instructs them to work together to design and build a groundbreaking new circus for the butterflies. Amid the magical ambiance of the circus and the hint of danger from Madam Morpho’s pursuers, she and Mr. Murdoch soon find that their scientific collaboration has produced chemistry of a more romantic kind.

Let’s Join the Circus!

No, it’s true– I always dreamed of running away with the circus. I grew up in a boring house in a boring suburb and spent hours practicing various acts in the backyard. From hanging by my knees on the monkey bars to riding a unicycle to juggling rings on a balance board, I amassed Stupid Human Tricks that would come in seriously handy as a birthday party clown in high school–and at college parties. I can even make balloon giraffes.
But if I ran away to Criminy’s circus, I can tell you exactly what I would do: I would be the trick rider.
I’ve always loved horses, and so bludmares were a natural fit in the world of Sang. Modeled on my favorite draft breeds and resembling the destriers of medieval knights, the horses in my world are big, beautiful, and so vicious that they wear metal muzzle caps over their mouths. After all, you’re not going to get very far if your mount bites off your foot. In my first book, WICKED AS THEY COME, it’s revealed that Criminy once had his heart broken by a trick rider, and I may– or may not– have had myself in mind when picturing Merissa resplendent, her bare feet planted firmly on the backs of snow-white bludmares with plumes dipping off their tossing heads.
Second to that, I’d be an aerialist. I can do a little Spanish web and trapeze– at least enough to get up off the ground. But since the caravan travels, I haven’t incorporated such an act– yet. I’m sure Mr. Murdoch could devise a clever way to get acrobats into the air.
If you want in on the secret of the sexy artificer who devises the clockworks and equipment at the caravan, pick up my first e-novella in the Blud series, THE MYSTERIOUS MADAM MORPHO. It’s all about the steamy romance that builds between the mysterious Mr. Murdoch and a hot new act in Criminy’s caravan.

So… If you’d like to join our merry company… please list in the comments below what part YOU would play in our circus. Delilah would be one of our trick riders… I believe I’ll take the part of Ringmaster. Be creative, be fanciful… and one of you will win an ecopy of THE MYSTERIOUS MADAM MORPHO!

Today’s featured is playing double duty. First, we’ve got a fantastic author, Laura Kaye, to talk about her stories’ musical inspirations.  Then, since she’s one of the 50 awesome authors who’ll be attending Olde City, New Blood in February… there’s a contest entry form below her info. Fill out the Rafflecopter link and enter to WIN YOUR WAY IN to the mini-con!!! First things, first, though… the music 🙂

Words & Music
By Laura Kaye

People often ask me how I come up with my stories, and it’s a hard question to answer. I don’t feel like I “come up” with them. I feel like they come through me, usually led by a character who tells me more and more of the story until I know enough to start writing. But there’s no question that music helps that process. Sometimes it’s a single line of lyrics. Sometimes it’s the tone of the song that sets the atmosphere. Sometimes a song reflects a scene just perfectly.

Today, I’m challenging myself to pick just one song that best captures the way my stories feels in my mind. So read on for a little glimpse – and listen – to how my books sound to me.

Hearts in Darkness
Contemporary Romance
“She is Love” by Parachute

This is how Caden feels about Makenna…

Forever Freed
Paranormal Romance
“In the End” by Linkin Park

This story embodies the angst in Lucien’s heart and head…

North of Need
Fantasy Romance
“When I See You Smile” by Bad English

This is how Owen feels about Megan, and captures his sweetness…

In the Service of the King
Dark Paranormal Romance
“Say When” by The Fray

This totally encompasses how Kael, the vampire king, feels to me and also captures the romantic tension of the story itself…

Her Forbidden Hero
Contemporary Romance
“Your Love is a Song” by Switchfoot

This song inspired me so much about this story that I did something I’d never done before—write an entire manuscript while listening to music (one song, on repeat, over 500 times!). It so perfectly encompassed the tone, feeling, and deep connection between Marco and Alyssa…

West of Want
Fantasy Romance
“Never Let Me Go” by Florence & the Machine

This song is the perfect soundtrack for two emotional scenes in the book—one from Ella’s point of view, and one from Zeph’s…it captures the way I feel these scenes…

One Night with a Hero (releases 10/20/12)
Contemporary Romance
“Yellow” by Coldplay

As with Her Forbidden Hero, I found myself again inspired by a song enough to write the whole book to it. This is how Brady and Joss feel to me…

Have you ever associated a song with a particular book? If so, tell us all about it! And thanks for reading!
