15 Day Book Blogger Challenge – Day 5

Posted July 17, 2013 By Jennifer

15DayBloggerChallenge

So… April from Good Books and Good Wine created this little 15 day challenge (you can read about what prompted it by clicking on the graphic above). I’m starting about 4 or 5 days behind her, but she says that’s ok… so here goes…

I was on a roll… 3 days in and everything was lovely… then I missed two days in a row!!! So… playing catch up. There’ll be 3 of these posts today, lol.

And… we’re up to number 5: Recommend a tear jerker.

Well, now. Considering I don’t like books that make me cry, this is going to be a challenge for me. I have read book, very very good books, that I really love, that have made me cry. When that happens, I take a moment to mentally grumble at the author, and move on. It is VERY hard for me to pick up a book to read if I KNOW it’s going to make me cry. (One of the reasons I refuse to read The Fault In Our Stars!)

So… with that in mind… I’ll recommend a couple of books that I loved DESPITE their making me cry, not BECAUSE they did.

1) After The Night by Linda Howard – This was my very first “romance book”. I’ve probably reread this book about 50 times, and I cry in the same place every. single. time.

2) Sisters of the Moon/Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn – The storyline of these books takes a decidedly darker turn after the first few books. And although I love the characters, and the world, and the series… Yasmine has managed to tweak my waterworks in many of the more recent additions. There is comic relief, and lots of romance, but the bad is really bad, and I DON’T LIKE IT!!! *shakes fist at the meanie-head author*

So… now it’s your turn… what books get to YOU?? *I’ll be making a note of which books I should avoid, lol* Do you LIKE the books that make you weepy? Why did you cry, and WHY SHOULD I READ THEM ANYWAY???

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge – Day 4

15DayBloggerChallenge

So… April from Good Books and Good Wine created this little 15 day challenge (you can read about what prompted it by clicking on the graphic above). I’m starting about 4 or 5 days behind her, but she says that’s ok… so here goes…

I was on a roll… 3 days in and everything was lovely… then I missed two days in a row!!! So… playing catch up. There’ll be 3 of these posts today, lol.

First… day 4 = the last book I flung across the room.

I’m generally pretty good about choosing books that won’t give me this urge. Now, that’s not to say I don’t have strong reactions to some of the things I don’t like in a book, but it’s got to be PRETTY BIG to actually cause the “throwing impulse”. Honestly, there are only three that I can think of that made me truly want to throw them. And one, I can’t even remember the name of, probably because I hated the ending so much that my brain is shielding me from the title! I was seriously ANGRY about that book for days!!

1) City of Bone by Cassandra Clare – If you’ve read this series you KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!! I love this series, I really, really do. And if I had been thinking logically, I wouldn’t have been nearly as upset as I was at the end of that book. But it was such an emotional, unexpected blow that it caused a very irrational reaction. I definitely wanted to toss that one… and IMMEDIATELY start book 2!!!

2) Lover Enshrined by J R Ward – I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It’s, honestly, the series I judge most all other urban fantasy books against. HOWEVER… reading Phury’s book ’bout dang near KILL’T ME!!! I wanted to run that book over with a freakin’ tractor!!! There were a couple of reasons why: 1)The mis- and non- communication between characters in that book drove me batshitcrazy!!! 2) The EFFING WIZARD. ‘Nuff said. There are a lot of important things that happen in that book. I’m very glad I read it, and by the end, the things that made me want to throw it had worked themselves out (for the most part). But it’s still my least favorite of the series.

3) the book I can’t remember the title for – by the guy I can’t remember the name of. Was a contemporary about people who met online, and slowly formed a relationship. Eventually we find out the woman was married, but unhappily so. Things get tense when the husband finds out, and pleads with the online guy to give him a chance to fix his marriage. The ending was abrupt, confusing, unsatisfying, and made me want to toss the book out the window. Instead, the universe interceded and erased the title and author from my mind, lol.

So, my lovelies… what book have YOU read lately that made you see red?? Any book almost earn some frequent flyer miles for repeat trips to the wall?? Not one that just made you mad, but actually incited RAGE!! Let it all out in the comments 🙂

You might remember a few weeks ago, we featured a fun Kait Ballenger post just before AFTER DARK was released. That book had a prequel novella, SHADOW HUNTER, to her debut paranormal romance series, Execution Underground. Today, we’re spotlighting the first full length novel in the series, TWILIGHT HUNTER, which will be out August 27th.

TwilightHunter_Final1

Nothing can stop Frankie Amato from defending her kind-or catching the rogue responsible for killing women in her territory. For that, this alpha female needs Jace’s skills more than she wants to admit. But as their investigation exposes evil truths, need burns into a passion that dare not be fulfilled. For to do so will have deadly consequences for them both…

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge – Day 2

Posted July 12, 2013 By Jennifer

15DayBloggerChallenge

So… April from Good Books and Good Wine created this little 15 day challenge (you can read about what prompted it by clicking on the graphic above). I’m starting about 4 or 5 days behind her, but she says that’s ok… so here goes… my day 2: What’s my bedtime reading ritual?

This is easy, cause it’s pretty much my “anytime reading ritual”. I generally read on my bed, so it’s the same whenever, lol. I generally lay on my stomach (or my side) on my bean bag, with my book (or Nook, but usually my book) laying flat on the bed. The bean bag mushes down to exactly where I need it to be, no matter what little shifts I make to stay comfortable. No worries about the weight of anything, the book’s not going anywhere if/when I start to pass out. It’s a win/win setup 🙂

Ok, my lovelies… YOUR TURN! What’s your (anytime) reading ritual?? Does anyone else use a bean bag??
