Words & Music Monday with Alice Clayton

Posted December 16, 2013 By Jennifer

I don’t even have the words for how happy today’s featured author makes me. I love her books, and she’s a joy to be around. Even though the majority of my reading is in the paranormal romance genre, when I need something different… Alice Clayton is one of my go-to, always awesome, contemporary romance authors. I’m sure you’ve all heard about the hilarious perfection (IMHO) that is WALLBANGER. (And did you hear the NEWS??? More about that soon.) Today we’re a stop on the blog tour that’s helping Alice celebrate the release of the final book in her Redhead series, THE REDHEAD PLAYS HER HAND.

So… Alice is giving us the scoop on the music that goes along with all of Jack and Grace’s fun-loving shenanigans.

1) When you write, do you listen to music?

YES! I have to have something playing in the background, my ear buds need to be in for me to totally  concentrate.

2) Do you play certain types of music, or certain songs, to get in the mood for  certain scenes? Do any of your books have playlists?
I usually like to  listen to the Prodigy station on Pandora, it seems to not only make me  write faster but I can’t really sing along so I don’t get distracted.  Classical music also helps, especially when I am trying to work  something out. There are a few songs that I put on my website from  Wallbanger, big band music mostly. But my Redhead Series, that not only  has a playlist, there’s a chapter by chapter soundtrack! <<insert Jennifer’s fangirl squeel, here>> Check it out at
3) Do any of your main characters have “theme songs”. Any couples?
There  are a few songs that most certainly bring to mind different scenes,  especially from The Redhead Series. Into The Mystic by Van Morrison,  I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight by U2, Until She Comes by  Psychedlic Furs, those are all good ones from that series.
4) What is your own, personal theme song? If you don’t have one, who would you like to write one for you?
Oh my goodness, what a great question! I don’t have a theme song, but I do have a Top 5, that occasionally  rotates but is usually something like:
Into The Mystic
With or Without You
Mustang Sally
Stand By Me
****** SO… who wants an ebook copy of a book in the Redhead series?? One commenter below will get receive their choice of one of the Redhead books. Whether you haven’t started yet, or you’re dying to get your hands on Jack (and Grace) in book 3… this one’s on me. To enter – tell me in the comments what YOUR theme song is 🙂 If you don’t a specific theme song, tell me one song that always makes you happy. Thanks to Alice for taking a few minutes out of her crazy schedule for chatting with us. I can’t wait to see your song choices!! Contest is open now, and will close at midnight pacific on Tuesday, Dec 17th. Good luck!!******

Feature And Follow # 178: Featured Blog Post

Posted December 5, 2013 By Jennifer

featuredbloggerHello, my lovelies. Some of you who have a long list of favorite blogs are probably familiar with Parajunkee’s and AlisonCanRead’s weekly Feature and Follow posts. It’s a fantastic way to check in with familiar blogs and discover new ones. Books Make Me Happy is stepping in as a Featured Blog for this week’s post!! I’m excited to check out all of the other blogs participating this week!

If you’re new here… WELCOME… I hope you find something fun while you’re poking around in my playground. I kinda like it here 🙂

As is customary… I have a questions to answer…

What is one new or unusual thing you’ve done in 2013?

It’s actually VERY cool that THIS is the question that I got for this post, considering I did something really unusual in 2013. I planned and directed an author/reader convention in 2013!!! Olde City, New Blood was an UF/PNR convention in St. Augustine, FL this past February. It was insane, and crazy, and beautiful, and nerve-wracking, and amazing, and unbelievably cool. We had over 50 authors, and about 150 readers and bloggers, all hanging out and having a blast by the beach. It was incredible. It wasn’t without glitches, but it was SO worth the crazy.

We moved the 2014 event to Daytona Beach, and changed the name to Coastal Magic Convention. But it’ll still be a small(ish) convention, focused on bringing readers and authors together in a very casual, very interactive weekend. Registration is open, and there’s even a blog hop happening RIGHT NOW (it ends Friday at midnight!!) to win a free registration!

So… that’s an unusual thing *I* did in 2013. What about all of YOU??? What fun, interesting, and/or unusual things have YOU been up to this year?? I can’t wait to hear about all of your adventures! 🙂

After you chat with me a bit in the comments below… be sure to check out all of the other blogs who are joining in this week’s post. Hope to see you back here another time for other features and fun stuff. 🙂

Review: ALLURE (Hoodoo Apprentice, #2) by Lea Nolan

Posted December 5, 2013 By bookophile81

FINAL Allure Cover- Medium ResolutionAuthor: Lea Nolan
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Pages: 304
ISBN #: 9781622660223
FTC Disclaimer: Book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.

**spoilers for book 1, CONJURE**

Emma Guthrie is back in Lea Nolan’s second installment of her awesome HooDoo Apprentice series. Allure picks up right where Conjure left off. This story focuses more on Cooper Beaumont and his family. The men in his family, through several generations, have been cursed to become horrible, gluttonous human beings once they reach manhood (usually around their sixteenth birthday). The Beaumont Curse was an act of revenge by the same root worker in Conjure, because Cooper’s ancestor sold her daughter to the pirates that killed her. Emma goes back to work with Miss Delia to try and find a way to break the curse. An unexpected obstacle, in the form of Miss Delia’s great-grandaughter Taneea, slows down progress. As Cooper’s sixteenth birthday inches ever closure, Emma notices that Cooper is becoming less like himself and wonders if she is already out of time. However, Emma is working against a force she never expected and she learns exactly how strong she can be.

Allure is just as stunning as Conjure. My one complaint is Cooper. I HATED his character. I know it wasn’t his fault, and it speaks to Lea’s tremendous story-telling ability, that my reaction is so strong toward him. However, every time he hurt Emma I wanted to punch him in the face just to make him feel some of the pain that he was causing her. I LOVE how, even though Emma’s heart was breaking, she was still willing to do whatever she could to save him. I also wanted to punch Taneea in the face. She was snotty and catty and just all around HORRIBLE!! I kept hoping for some redemption with her character…but there was NONE!!  Of course, its the sign of a well written villian when I kept hoping something AWFUL would happen to her. So, thank you Lea!

Can’t wait to see what comes next!!

I WONDER… Wednesday – #4 – Podcasts

Posted December 4, 2013 By Jennifer

Hello, my lovies 🙂 And welcome to a new mid-week feature, called “I Wonder…”. Basically, this is my chance to chat with you all about something I’ve been pondering. Every week’s topic will be book/publishing/author related in some way. I’m looking for feedback on these posts… so I’d love to hear your thoughts. (It’s lonely over here in my little corner of cyberspace!!)

This week, I’m excited to have some of my very favorite people TALKING JUST TO ME!!! Ok, fine… they’re not talking JUST to me… they’re talking to anyone who listens to their podcast. It was a strange turn of deja-vu-all-over-again for me last week. Two different groups of ladies that I used to listen to in a couple of podcasts a few year ago, BOTH started up NEW podcasts within a week or two of each other!!! *dances with fangirl joy*

For those of you not familiar with podcasts… they’re recordings that generally center around a particular theme, and are usually done on some kind of regular basis, so people can listen weekly/monthly/etc. I’ve seen them for just about everything under the sun, but haven’t really gotten involved in too many of them. (I’m not sure why, because they make me happy, lol.)

The two NEW podcasts I’m talking about are (you can click their images to visit the podcast site):

BlushesAvatarBlushes Podcast: Featuring authors Christina Lauren (Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings), Alice Clayton, and publicist Enn Bocci. These ladies will CRACK YOU UP!!! Their discussions cover books, movies, tv, and other pop culture, in a way only they can. They’re easygoing and irreverent, and their friendship is evident in their discussion. There have been two episodes so far, and they’re both fantastic. You can listen to Blushes Podcast on their podbean site, or through iTunes. It’s free to listen, download, and subscribe.

GeekPinkGeek Is The New Pink: These four ladies have “geekdom” down to an artform. I love their enthusiasm and their playfulness. Any fandom you can think of will have representation here. Books, music, film, television, videogames… you name it… they’re following it. Nicole, Rachel, Anna, and Sammi have different tastes and passions, and they blend so well in this type of interaction. You can listen to Geek Is The New Pink on iTunes. Again, it’s free to listen, download, and subscribe.

I know of a few other podcasts out there that I’d like to try listening to… Anton Strout’s “Once and Future Podcast” is generally book related with author guests… and Tee Morris (and friends) has done many podcasts, mostly with Steampunk elements.

So… have any of you ever listened to podcasts?? If so, which ones? If not… did you know about them? Will you be looking for something you can try out? Have any of you listened to the few I mentioned?? I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments!!
