KiraSeattle makes me happy.
by Kira Brady

I’ve traveled to many places in my time, but nowhere makes me as happy as home. Seattle is a magical place, full of quirky artists, tech geeks, and book nerds. The Seattle of the Deadglass Trilogy is no different: through all its gritty, broken pieces, something beautiful shines through.

What’s not to love? Every direction you look has a beautiful view, whether it’s the Olympic Mountains to the west, the Cascades to the east, Mount Rainier to the south, or Mount Baker to the north. Sure, they may be covered by a shadowy veil most of the time, but we live with the hope that any moment the sun will break through the clouds and shock us out of our coffee-induced haze with a vista worth waiting for. Even the old industrial sites can be beautiful, like Gas Works Park, an old coal gasification plant that is now a park. It was my childhood playground. I climbed the old boilers and pipes, fed the geese on the coal loading dock, and flew kites on the hill overlooking Lake Union. I liked it so much, I wrote it into all three Deadglass books, setting a massive shifter-human-demigod battle over Kite Hill and along the lakefront.

The history and ghost stories of Seattle make me happy. I love the haunted brick alleys of Pioneer Square and Underground Seattle, the morbid past of the century-old Pike Place Market, and the vibrant waterfront with its wheel and fish and ferries. The city is packed with world-class theater and sports (GO HAWKS!), but right on our doorstep is wilderness and wildness that calls to be explored.

Even the rain makes me happy. I love the feeling of walking into a coffee shop to escape the drizzle and being hit by the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of dozens of writers working on their laptops. When it’s blustery outside, I curl up with a good book and a pot of tea, and at night, the gentle patter of rain on the rooftop lulls me to sleep.

Seattle is a city of unique neighborhoods, and Ballard is my favorite. We celebrate our Scandinavian heritage with a big parade for Norwegian Independence Day, wear our Viking hats with pride, and eat cardamom braid, aebleskiver, and pickled herring. It made me ridiculously happy to twist our cultural heritage into something dark in the Deadglass Trilogy with the immortal Norse dragon shifters who rule Ballard with an iron fist. All my favorite parts of the city went into the books, including the chocolate factory in all its deliciously evil glory.

Hearts of Darkness  Hearts of Shadow

Seattle makes me happy, and writing about Seattle makes me even happier. I hope you’ll let me share the city’s salvation with you in the final installment of the Deadlgass Trilogy, Hearts of Chaos, which comes out on Tuesday. The first two books, Hearts of Darkness and Hearts of Shadow, are currently on sale as ebooks. More information can be found at http://kirabrady.com

Hearts of chaos

To celebrate Books Make Me Happy’s fourth “blogiversary”, I’m giving away a print copy of my new release! To enter… tell me something special about YOUR hometown. What do you look forward to “coming home” to when you’re away? What do you tell others to look for and/or do when they visit? Where’s your favorite place to wander to when you leave your house?

HEARTS OF CHAOS
Kensington Zebra, March 2014
available in print, ebook, and audiobook

To save her world, one woman’s fierce quest will put her up against an ancient evil–and a desire too dangerous to deny . . .

She is betrothed to Seattle’s most feared shifter clan leader. Still, the Lady Lucia can never be the dainty aristocratic wife Emory Corbette thinks he needs. And as a malevolent, all-consuming monster plots to take hold of their shattered world, Lucia will risk her untapped powers to defeat it–and challenge the Raven King’s seductive rule. No one in Emory’s many lifetimes has ever defied him. Lucia’s courage and strength are shaking his iron control to its core. . .and making him hungry for all she can give. But their only hope is a wrenching sacrifice that could unite humans and shifters in victory–or destroy everything Lucia and Emory desire most. . .

“Seamlessly weaving threads of Babylonian, Norse, and Northwest Native American fables, Brady creates a dark, rich tapestry. The trilogy ends as it began: with beautifully rendered prose and multidimensional characters who capture readers’ hearts.”  – Publishers Weekly

First, congratulations to the Amazing Jennifer, and Books Make Me Happy, for not only surviving four years, but thriving!

So, what makes me happy?
by Laura Anne Gilman

I’ll let you in on a little secret: a lot of things make me happy.  Good food, time with friends, sunrise on a quiet morning, a new book to write (or read)….In fact, I’m kind of the opposite of Bruce Banner: I’m always happy.

Okay, maybe not always (as we hear my friends snickering in the background).  But even on the days that aren’t good, even when I’m cranky, crabby, or otherwise 100% done with the world, even when things suck beyond all belief, even when you’re in pain, or in sorrow, I’m aware that happiness isn’t entirely gone.  It’s just waiting for you to touch it again.

Sometimes, literally.

happy

Ladies and gents: Boomerang, the Cat of Size, and his little brother Castiel Kitten of Thursday (aka Menace to Society).  Because when I get down, they know.  And they wander over to my desk, or jump on the sofa, or thump themselves next to me on the bed, and do their damndest to make me pay attention to something other than what’s stressing me out. Petting is required, and rewarded with purrs. And even through we joke that “damn it, Cas” is the most commonly heard phrase in this household, it’s almost inevitably followed by laughter (Almost inevitably.  Kittens: cute for survival purposes).

“HAPPY” Blogiversary Celebration with Erin Kellison

erinA big HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to Jennifer and her blog, Books Make Me Happy!
from Erin Kellison

Today I went down to breakfast and asked my husband and kids, What makes me happy? so that I could have ideas for this post. The obvious answer is books, but Jennifer kinda already has that covered in her blog name. One of my daughters said, writing! But writing also makes me want to put my head through a wall, so it wasn’t completely true. My husband, to whom I go for ideas all the time, suggested Ponch and Jon from the show Chips. I sent him a withering glare because he thought he was being clever. But Ponch was my first crush (I think I was six or seven), even if my mom did not get me the Chips lunchbox I wanted so bad. CHIPS

Then I went about my regularly scheduled morning, finding kids’ not-so-terribly-dirty jeans in the laundry to recycle for one more day and packing backpacks. Before the last one goes out the door, I get about fifteen minutes with my littlest to read to her. We are on book four of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She cuddles up to me as I read about the Yule Ball.

And I have my answer: The time I spend reading with my kids, buying them books, reading their stories makes me absolutely, unreservedly, deliriously happy. Every day. No matter what.

Ponch gets an honorable mention though.

And because I am suddenly so happy—thank you, Jennifer—I am delighted to give away an ecopy (Amazon or BN) of any one of my books. See erinkellison.com to choose.

THANKS, ERIN!!!! Now… to enter… fess up to YOUR first crush 🙂

TawdraBook boyfriends make me happy!
by Tawdra Kandle
I am a long-time married lady, with four grown and nearly grown offspring, but every now and then, a girl needs to spend some time with a fictional guy. . .who is hot, hunky and heaps of fun. My friends tease me for hoarding book boyfriends, and it’s true. But they really all do love me. . .and one of my author friends indulged me by writing ME into a story about one of my book guys. In the story, I was wild, crazy and had a dragon. What more can you ask?
