East of Ecstasy

East of Ecstasy Excerpt:

By Laura Kaye

You guys! I can’t believe release day for East of Ecstasy is finally here! This is the final book in my Hearts of the Anemoi series, which includes: North of Need, West of Want, and South of Surrender. The Anemoi were wind gods the Greek associated with controlling the wind, weather, and seasons. In East of Ecstasy, hero Devlin Eston is the heir to the East Wind which has long been associated with unluckiness, misfortune, and, thanks to Devlin’s father, even evil. Devlin himself has been the victim of father’s evil, and thereby finds himself an outcast among his own divine family. In this scene, heroine Annalise Fallston—who gets visions that she’s forced to paint in order to quiet them in her mind—sees Devlin for the first time. Here’s what she says:

Forcing the chaos in her mind away, Anna dipped her brush into the gray and stepped to the canvas. Motion captured her attention from the corner of her eye.

The Dark Man, the subject of her recent paintings, stood in the doorway and leaned against the jamb.

Anna jumped and her pulse raced, but this time, anger flooded in instead of fear. “I will deal with you on my own damn terms,” she said, taking a perverse amount of pleasure from putting a figment of her imagination in its place. Because that’s all he was.

He didn’t move or speak. Not that he could, since, you know. Figment.Of.Imagination.

Anna rolled her eyes, done with being scared and so pissed to have to do this again that she was nearly out of her mind. “I’m doing your damn painting already. So just leave me alone.” She cut her gaze back to the expanse of white, but the desire to see if his image would still be there if she looked again drove her to distraction.

Finally, she gave in and…he was still there.

Completely still.Blatantly scowling.Totally unfathomable.

Was this a vision? Another image she’d have to paint?

Her heart tripped into a sprint, and she couldn’t look away from him. Like the compulsion that forced her to paint these images, Anna couldn’t help but return his stare and memorize his masculine features. The sharp angles of his face, the harsh set of his mouth, the dark shadows around his even darker eyes.Black eyes. Blades of black hair hung low over his forehead and just touched the hooded shirt he wore under his short, scuffed leather jacket. He’d crossed his arms over his chest, and the position caused his biceps to bunch up under the worn leather. In fact, everything about him appeared worn—the coat, the threadbare jeans, the scuffed boots. None of it struck her as the kind of shabby chic you could buy in some upscale store for a small fortune, either. The whole effect was rough. Dangerous.Deprived.

Deprived? What a strange way of describing him. But as Anna’s gaze swept over him again, the thought stuck. For his height, he seemed thin, with his lean hips, clad in old black jeans, a trim waist, and pronounced cheekbones. Her fingers twitched around the nearly forgotten paintbrush. What would it feel like to cup that harsh face in her hand?

Anna gasped and tore her gaze away. She had to blink to pull herself out of the haze of thoughts. Frustration surged through her and tensed the muscles of her shoulders and neck. She didn’t want to be working on another of these paintings as it was, so the last thing she needed was to lose a bunch of time daydreaming. Or would it be daynightmaring?

As she stared at the blank canvas, the image of the shackled man behind the prison bars filled her mind’s eye.

Definitely the latter.

Curiosity pulled her eyes to the left again. The doorway was empty.

So, did you have a favorite line from the excerpt? Thanks for reading!

But first, Dev must master the unstable powers he’s been given. Distrusted and shunned by his own divine family, he never expected to find kindness and passion in the arms of a mortal.

A Woodfalls Girls novel
(from author website)

Just when she thought things were going up…

Two years after a devastating breakup, Brittni Mitchell has moved on from Justin Avery—or so she tells herself. But when she returns to Seattle for her best friend’s engagement party, Brittni finds herself the victim of a disastrously timed elevator breakdown. She’s trapped with the last person she wants to face, and forced to recount the past she desperately wants to forget.

She’s going to have to look back…

When Brittni left her podunk hometown for a big city college experience at the University of Washington, hooking up with a guy like Justin Avery was not part of her plan. Between Justin’s attention-grabbing tattoos, cigarette smoking, and bad boy attitude Brittni quickly chalked him up as “Mr. Wrong.” But his charm was unrelenting, and Brittni’s decision to give Justin a chance quickly turned into the worst choice she ever made.

So that she might be able to move forward.

Now she’s stuck with Justin—literally—and the complicated web of misunderstandings that tied up the truth for two years is about to unravel.

You’ll have to wait a bit longer to read MISUNDERSTANDINGS… but you can pick up the first two books in Tiffany’s Daemon Hunter Novels now. Here’s a little teaser from book two to get you started…

“Shush,” he hissed in my ear. FINAL-cover-for-amazon

My body tensed under him as I heard a weird beating noise in the distance. It sounded like a bird flapping its wings, but a hundred times louder. Peeking over Emrys’s shoulder, I saw a large shape in the sky, just as it broke through the haze. I gulped loudly at the sheer magnitude of the bird that really wasn’t a bird since it was also shaped like a monkey, but with humongous wings that would rival a small airplane.

“Don’t move,” Emrys breathed into my ear as he angled his head so he was covering my face from view. I acknowledged his words by meeting his eyes. I could hear the flapping of the wings as the kooky monkey bird circled above us.

I knew if Emrys had reacted this way our situation was precarious, but I couldn’t help thinking about the fact that his body was sprawled on top of mine. We had shared our fair share of kisses over the course of our unusual relationship. I could feel every lean muscle of his contours as he tried to cover me from sight. His weight was not a burden. It felt so right that it took all my willpower not to shift underneath him to see if the sensations got even better.

“I think we can get up,” Emrys said, looking amused, which definitely got my hackles up. I was embarrassed that I was the only one focused on our compromising positions.

“Then get off me,” I said, pushing at his chest.

“Say please,” he teased.

“No,” I said stubbornly, shoving harder. I was pissed at myself for acting like a total twit.

“Why are you mad?” he asked, using his strength to hold himself in place. “It’s nothing,” I muttered, feeling mortified. “Tell me,” he coaxed, placing his lips on the corner of my eye and then trailing down my cheek toward my lips. My embarrassment and anger slipped away as the same dazzling side effects of his kisses took over my senses.

“Tell me,” he repeated, pulling away. Completely entranced, I couldn’t remember why I was angry, so I answered honestly.

“I liked how it felt to be so close to you,” I admitted, knotting my hands in his hair so I could pull him close again. “And you didn’t seem to notice,” I added just before I crushed my lips to his so he could see my point.

He gave in to my demands and returned the kiss. I sighed with pleasure as his tongue found mine. Everything faded away as the sensations of having him so close wrapped around me like I had been dipped in some kind of euphoric concoction. Emrys, of course, was the one who broke the kiss since I became a dizzy fry head anytime his lips came anywhere near me. “I did notice, by the way. Why do you think I made it seem like a gleason was going to eat you?” he asked, dropping his lips to my neck.

“Hmmm,” I asked, trying to sort out his words in my head. “A gleason, the flying monkey thing? It was harmless,” he said smugly, trailing his lips back to mine. “Oh, and the creatures here can see me.” “You dick,” I gasped, finally able to make sense of what he was telling me. “I may have fabricated danger so I could kiss you,” he said, unaware of the new surge of anger that was swirling through me. “You ass. I thought I was going to get eaten,” I said, punching him in the shoulder and scrambling out from under him.

Grinning deviously he also climbed to his feet, unconcerned about my anger. “Well, the scraggier would have. That was close.” “Not funny,” I said, jabbing a finger in his chest. “Haven’t you ever heard of the Boy Who Called Wolf or in this case, flying freaky monkey?” I added, stomping off before he could answer.

“Um, Jordyn?”

“Don’t talk to me,” I grumbled, still stomping my feet to show my anger.

“Jordyn,” he said in a more serious tone. “What?” I said, not turning around. “Don’t take another step. You’re about to make a mistake.”

“Right—” I said as the sand under my feet disappeared.

His stomach roared its discontent. Good hell, he was hungry.

But could he afford to indulge in morsels of succulent calf seared to perfection right now? They’d be easy enough to snatch from some unsuspecting diner’s table.

No. There was no time to waste because he was too damn busy playing this ridiculous game of “here, doggy, doggy.” Which he wouldn’t be doing if it weren’t for the alleged vision.

A sharp whistle stopped him in his tracks and again his ears twitched to the tune of two men yelling, “Here, boy! C’mon, puppy!”

That’s Mr. Werewolf to you.

Max flared his nostrils and huffed in distaste. Puppy. He was no damn puppy.

As he sought shelter, he had to wonder, did it get any worse than this? Hoofing the streets like some desolate stray, searching for what his Aunt Eva claimed was his prophecy?

In Hoboken, New Jersey?

Yet, here he was, prophecy hunting. Because that’s what everyone in his pack did. When the call came, they all had a destiny to fulfill. No one ignored the call.

Especially not Max. Because he liked living.

He held an intense disdain for all the mumbo-jumbo folklore bullshit beaten into his psyche since he was a child, but there was no proof he wouldn’t die if he didn’t mate by the first full moon after meeting his destiny.

So mate he would.

The bolded area is what we used for the Mad Lib. I’m SO excited to read this!!!

Now, for the winner of the ebook… ::drumroll::

Congratulations!!!! I’ll be emailing you for your ebook preferences momentarily 🙂

Thanks to everyone for participating. I hope you all LOVE the book!!! And thanks to Dakota for sharing her story with us!

I WONDER… Wednesday – Favorite Blog Posts??

Posted April 9, 2014 By Jennifer

Hello, my lovies 🙂 And welcome to a mid-week feature, called “I Wonder…”. Basically, this is my chance to chat with you all about something I’ve been pondering. Every week’s topic will be book/publishing/author related in some way. I’m looking for feedback on these posts… so I’d love to hear your thoughts. (It’s lonely over here in my little corner of cyberspace!!)

Ok… so… between Coastal Magic in February, my birthday in March, being sick, and my store closing… there has been a LOT going on in my real life. I admit to being a neglectful blog mommy, and I’m sorry. I’m working on catching up, and have some fun things coming soon. Which got me thinking… what do YOU all like best about a book blog? Are you looking for reviews? I love to share my thoughts, but they seem to get the lease amount of feedback from readers. Is there something in particular you’re looking for IN a review?? Do you like blog tours and promotional blasts? I KNOW contests are always a favorite, but do you ever get tired of a certain type of thing? What about cover reveals? Special features and guest posts?? What do YOU all want to see more of?? I’m looking to get back to a regular schedule, and I want to make the most of this space. Thanks for all your input!!
