Kate Douglas Q&A and Giveaway: Romance Awareness Month

Just a few weeks ago, I was happily surprised to find that August is Romance Awareness Month! I can’t find an origin, but it’s a real thing, and I’m ALL FOR IT!

To celebrate, I sent an *all call* to some of my favorite romance authors, asking each of them the same questions about romance (their own, their favorites, and their characters). All month long we’ll be sharing the authors’ answers, and EVERY ONE OF THEM is offering a giveaway!

Today we get to help author Kate Douglas celebrate the re-release of the tenth book in her Wolf Tales series, and shine a spotlight on her current Spirit Wild series!

In April, Kate release DARK TERROR (Spirit Wild, #5). The Spirit Wild series is a spin-off of her incredibly popular Wolf Tales series (but can be read as a standalone series, if you’re not caught up on Wolf Tales.)

Before she was rescued from a human trafficking ring by the Chanku, Mary Ryder had lived a tortured life as a sex slave and prostitute, and the emotional scars of that time still haunt her. Through the patient strength and genuine devotion of Jack Temple, Mary is slowly learning to open herself to the possibility of uncorrupted love and passion in his arms. But before the two can explore their newfound connection and dream of life as a mated pair, they must face a dark menace threatening all Chanku.

Aldo Xanakis was thought to be dead, but harnessing the life force of those he had slain, he has reappeared as a dark and vicious demon hell-bent on the destruction of the pack–and of all humankind. With only days to stop the demon’s lethal plans and the fanatical religious cult he has enlisted to serve him, the entire Chanku pack unites to combine their power against him.

As Mary and Jack are thrown together in an epic battle against evil, they and the rest of the pack will be forced to harness all the magic and sensual power they possess to preserve their way of life and everything they hold dear.

What is your simple definition of “romance”?

People fall in love (gender/number of protagonists not important) but go through hell until they find their happily ever after.

What is the most romantic thing someone’s done for you?

My husband gave me an engagement ring fifteen years after we were married–we were so dirt poor when he originally proposed that we could only afford his wedding band–gold was still $36 an ounce and his ring cost $55 (and we had a payment plan for that!) and the jeweler threw mine in for free. That was almost 46 years ago, and I’m still wearing that same gold band–and the engagement ring when we go out.

Do you have any “romance mishaps” you can share?

A terrible first marriage, very brief, that I refer to as my training marriage. I learned everything I DIDN’T want in a husband. The next time I knew what I wanted and I still have him.

If your own romance was a novel, the title would be…

Love, Laughter, and Occasional Thoughts of Murder

What is the most romantic thing one of your characters has done for their love interest?

In Wolf Tales 12, Keisha Rialto pulls her spouse Anton Cheval, the pack alpha, away from a stressful situation and takes him to a beautiful hidden glen where she forces him to relax, makes love to him, and sends him back refreshed to do what needs to be done. That brief moment of respite is, to me, the most romantic thing a partner can do for the one they love.

Do you have a favorite romance trope? (Either to read, or write.) If so, which one?

I’ve always loved Beauty and the Beast stories, a damaged or different hero and a partner who loves them for the person inside.

Who is your favorite (aside from one of your own) fictional romantic couple?

I’d have to say the lovers in the book I’m reading at the time. I love them all.

To help get readers ready for next April’s sixth book in the Spirit Wild series, Kate is offering up one print copy (US only, this time) of DARK MOON, to one of YOU! If you haven’t had the chance to get started, here’s some motivation! To enter, comment below with something romantic a character has done in your current (or last) read. One winner will be selected, at random, from all entries posted by August 15th, and notified by email. Full winners list will be posted on September 1st.
