Mistletoe Madness Blog Event featuring Molly Harper

Posted December 18, 2015 By Jennifer

Welcome to the Mistletoe Madness Blog Event!! I’ve teamed up with That’s What I’m Talking About and Blogging By Liza to bring you some fun holiday posts from a whole slew of awesome authors.

MistletoeMadness10

It’s is a two week event where authors with 2015 winter releases (November 2015 — January 2016) will take over our blogs with guest posts written from one of their character’s POV with a holiday theme (Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, New Years, etc.). There will be exclusive bonus scenes, recipes, top 10 lists… all manor of shenanigan is possible. Some authors are including giveaways, too, so be sure to check out each days’ posts! You can check out the full schedule on the Kickoff Post.

Today’s author has a history of giving us awesome books to read for the holidays! Molly Harper‘s FANGS FOR THE MEMORIES was released a few weeks ago (November 2nd). And today, she’s reviving a recipe first shared in last year’s holiday release, I’M DREAMING OF AN UNDEAD CHRISTMAS!

*****************************************************

Aunt Linda’s “Un-Vegetable” Green Beans

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • Six strips of thick-cut bacon
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 gallon canned cut green beans

Because if you left nutritional value in the vegetable, it wouldn’t be southern!

This is a great holiday side because you can fix it early in the day and let it simmer for several hours while you cook other dishes. The original recipe came from the McCracken County Schools Food Services Department, and then went through several experimental tweakings by various family members before we arrived at this version.

Chop bacon in to inch-long sections. In a large stainless steel pot, brown the bacon, leave the bacon and grease in the pot. Add green beans, garlic powder, butter and brown sugar. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low simmer and cover. Simmer for two to three hours. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors soak into the beans.

The green beans will in no way resemble a vegetable by the time they’re served. But they are DELICIOUS.

More of Molly’s recipes can be found on her web site at http://mollyharper.com/fun-stuff/

Here’s a wee snippet of the new Half Moon Hollow novella, FANGS FOR THE MEMORIES

Thanks to Molly for sharing her recipe. Now… how many of YOU have fun, a bit out of the normal fare, holiday recipes? What do you get asked to bring at all the holiday gatherings?

After you’ve share a bit… be sure to head over for the last day of posts from the other Mistletoe Madness blogs…

Today we get a sweet treat from an author who’s stories take place almost in my own back yard! Mandie StevensOlde City Angels series has angels, and stakes place in St. Augustine! And now, there’s hot chocolate! What’s not to love, lol??

Hey, Thomas Gallagher here–former human liaison and now an angel, thanks to being bonded to my partner, Eva. We’re getting ready for Eva’s first Christmas in this realm, and since we have the day off, I really want to make it special for her.

“We want to make it special for her.” Phenex takes a drag of his cigarette and flicks it onto the street.

I shake my head and lean against the wall in the alley. “Phen, do you even like Christmas? I didn’t think demons celebrated.”

“I was never technically a demon. I’m just not an angel anymore. Besides, this is about making Eva happy. She finally has friends and a real life. We even talked the vampire into having a big party at Spellbound, his bar.”

“He would do anything for her anyway. There wasn’t much talking.”

“Yep. He’s even letting her gargoyle friends come to the party, and we all know how well they get along.”

“Man, he has it bad.”

Phen coughs. “He isn’t the only one.”

Ignoring him, I speak as though he hadn’t. “So we have trees, a dessert bar . . .”

“She’s crazy about her desserts. I keep telling her she’ll eventually have to start eating some real food.”

“—and I’ve made her my mom’s creamy hot cocoa.”

“Well, isn’t that sweet?” Phenex rolls his eyes.

Caelum – Olde City Angels Book 1

Eva doesn’t claim to be a good guardian angel, but she tries. After she loses two charges, the Powers That Be begin to doubt her abilities. To redeem herself, Eva sets out to rescue Elsie, granddaughter of the former king of the Fae. A demon has kidnapped Elsie to complete an ancient ritual that will allow him to slip through the veil between Earth and Hell during the Sturgeon moon.

Thomas, an angel liaison, finally lands his first mission. But when he’s paired with the angel responsible for his uncle’s death, he has to put aside their differences to get the job done.

With unlikely friends in tow, Eva and Thomas are in a race against time. Save Elsie, save the world—oh, and save Eva’s job.

Eva and Thomas are getting on each others’ nerves. The two angels need a break, badly, but being bound to each other by magic means no separate vacations. To make things worse, when Thomas is charmed by a Succubus, their powers are compromised, making them a target for the local demonic population in Italy.

When their assignment to save a soul from Hell brings them face-to-face with someone from Thomas’ past, Eva is confronted with a choice: complete the mission and safe-guard their charge, or save her partner, the one being with whom she’s ever truly connected.

The Magic of Mistletoe

I read somewhere that mistletoe is a partial parasite, a “hemiparasite” to be exact. This plant actually sends out its roots to penetrate a tree and suck out all of its nutrients. Fun, huh? By its magical definition, mistletoe was considered to bestow life and fertility. It was a protection against poisons and yep, the best part is coming…mistletoe was an aphrodisiac. So it’s no wonder kissing beneath the mistletoe caught on so fast because everybody knows what a kiss leads to. (wink, wink)

WrappedInADonovanI believe in Christmas and the magical feeling of the season because I come from a big family that made this holiday the biggest and most enjoyable celebration every year. Only this year, I’m not spending the holidays with my family. I’m in Miami, starting my branch of the family business and trying to make a name for myself in the legal field. I’m working my ass off and seeing the results. I’ve just landed a huge case with a very reputable client. This case is everything the top defense attorneys in the world are made of—wealthy and famous family, business drama, family secrets and murder. I was actually salivating when Savian Donovan showed up at my door requesting representation. Unfortunately, that reaction wasn’t solely for the case he was presenting to me.

This guy, Mr. Donovan, was seriously HOT! And I didn’t need any mistletoe hanging above my head to want to kiss him. Still, it was there and so was I, and so I did. I stood on my tiptoes—because his hotness consisted of how tall and muscled he was—and kissed him. He kissed me back and that’s where the magic ended and the mischief of capturing my heart began.

Mr. Sexy As Hell Donovan could not only kiss, but he was fabulous in bed! He brought the most expensive and sexiest lingerie for a woman of my curvaceous size I’d ever seen. He had the best taste in cars and books and, like me, knew that work came first, always. The one fatal flaw with how this mistletoe thing worked was that when it extended its roots, it planted deep and wholeheartedly, so that even in my attempts to break free, I was caught, undoubtedly. I’m not a quitter, never have been, but damn, this love thing is hard, especially when the other party is resistant. Like I said before, I’ve always believed in the magic of Christmas and the romantic and fun allure of mistletoe, but this season I’m questioning everything, from the innocence of my client, to the faith I once had in the “most wonderful time of the year”. I’m really considering walking away from this one—the guy and the case. It’s just too much of an ordeal for me personally and, as it turns out, professionally. I’m reeling here and can only see one way out, but then…

…he kisses me under the mistletoe once more and the mischief really does turn to magic and our happily ever after finally begins.

Welcome to the Mistletoe Madness Blog Event!! I’ve teamed up with That’s What I’m Talking About and Blogging By Liza to bring you some fun holiday posts from a whole slew of awesome authors.

Today, Eric R Asher brings us a rare moment of peace from his Vesik world. (And if you’re not familiar with the Vesik series – with necromancers, fairies, and a few little puffball with teeth, – check below for your chance to win a book in the series!)

********************************************

Year’s End

Sam narrowed her gaze and scratched Jasper behind his eyes. The gray furball purred and swelled and nestled into our parents’ couch beside her and the presents stacked precariously on the armrest.

“Take it back,” she said.

“Fine,” I said. “Fine. I promise not to use my necromancy to make you punch yourself in the face for two weeks.”

“Children,” Mom said, raising an eyebrow while sitting a small steaming teacup and saucer on the coffee table.

“She started it,” Foster said, picking up a coffee stirrer and dropping it into the very alcoholic bourbon and cider.

“Oh you little bug.” Sam growled.

Foster flexed his wings and took a long pull on the straw before wincing away. “Holy hell.”

“Bug spray,” Sam said.

Aideen took a sip and smacked her lips. “It’s quite nice. Is that butter I taste, Andi?”

Mom nodded and settled herself onto the loveseat beside Dad. He put his arm around her and shifted a small stack of presents with his foot.

“Alright,” Frank said as he stepped around the snoring cu siths by the fireplace. He set a platter of cookies and chocolate covered bacon on the coffee table.

“Dear god,” Foster said. “There’s no fudge, you heathen.”

“I got it.” I looked toward the kitchen and smiled. Vicky hummed along with the Christmas music, batting Shiawase’s hand away when he tried to help.

“Maybe don’t put that by Foster,” Mom said. “He has quite the reputation.”

“A deserved reputation,” Aideen said after taking another sip of cider.

“Thank you, Vesiks,” Shiawase said. “I am honored to be at your gathering.” He bowed slightly before sitting on the floor by the coffee table.

“We can bring in a chair from the kitchen,” Dad said.

“Unnecessary, but thank you for the offer.”

The room shook. Glasses rattled in the cabinets and Foster steadied the small pyramid of fudge.

“Is he actually coming?” Sam asked.

The stone above the fireplace shifted, two black pockets forming above the mantle before pale green fires lit in each. A rap came at the patio door a moment later.

“Aeros,” I said. “I’m so glad you could make it.”

“I have not seen a Christmas like this in many years,” the Old God said. “I thank you for having me.”

Sam blipped over to the door and slid it open, leaving Jasper to tumble into the depression her butt had left in the cushion. The furball growled and righted himself.

Zola grunted as Sam’s hug threatened to fracture things best not fractured.

“It’s good to see you too, girl. It’s good to see you too.”

Zola offered me a smile as she made her way around the room, finally dragging a kitchen chair over between me and the snoring cu siths. Vicky followed Sam back to the couch and snatched a wide-eyed Jasper off the coffee table, his mouth stuffed with fudge.

“What a pig,” Foster said through a mouthful of chocolate.

“Fairies,” Aeros’s face muttered from the stone fireplace.

Dad stared at the rocky visage, but it didn’t seem to phase Mom at all.

“Pig,” Foster said again.

“He’s a dragon, not a pig,” Vicky said, hopping up to sit between Sam and me, barely leaving room for Frank to squeeze in. “Is it time for presents now?”

It was the kind of night that I would never forget, filled with family and food and the stories we’d probably retell until we were all dead and buried. I was pretty sure that wouldn’t stop some of us. Hell, look at Shiawase for that matter.

After a time, the wrapping paper sat in mountainous chaos across the room, leaving Foster and Aideen to question what they would do with a new lightsaber, Zola with a mouthful of horehound candy, a vampire welcome mat for Mom and Dad, and a fire extinguisher for Frank’s jerky.

I pulled the ribbon of the last present and tossed the tissue paper away. Inside waited a black T-shirt with a vampire’s skull on it. I smiled at Vicky. “Thanks, Kid.”

She kept her arms wrapped tight around the giant spherical stuffed panda bear we’d gotten her.

“Best Christmas ever?” I asked.

She hesitated, and then nodded.

“A toast,” Dad said. “To the friends who couldn’t be here, the friends we’ve lost, and the family we’ve gained. Here’s to the new year. May it be a peaceful one.” Dad raised his cup, and we all followed.

Cheers.
