I Wonder… Archive

IWonder

Hello, my lovies 🙂 And welcome to a mid-week feature, called “I Wonder…”. Basically, this is my chance to chat with you all about something I’ve been pondering. Every week’s topic will be book/publishing/author related in some way. I’m looking for feedback on these posts… so I’d love to hear your thoughts. (It’s lonely over here in my little corner of cyberspace!!)

Hello all 🙂

I just saw a picture on FB that made me laaauuuuggghhh!!!! But it also got me thinking about books I’ve read, and alteranative points of view.

Sooooo… first… how funny would THAT be??

However, while it may be funny to think about Draco as the narrator for the series, it would have been a VERY different story. And that got me thinking… if some of the books I loved had been written from a different character’s POV, would they have been as good? How would the stories have changed?

My book club is reading Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series right now… so the idea of reading that series from Rick’s POV, instead of Jane’s is *interesting*, but we’d miss SO much. However… from Jane’s POV, Rick has a LOT of secrets, so having access to those would create a whole NEW set of circumstances to drive the story. (We wouldn’t know about Beast, though… at least not for a while, lol. And it looks like there ARE some novellas from Rick’s POV, so I’ll actually get an answer to my question soon!!)

So… I’m wondering… which books would YOU be interested in reading from an alternative character point of view?? And how do you think it would change the storyline??

Hello, all!! In addition to the many things I claim as an “identity” when I introduce myself (daughter, sister, friend, book lover, music lover, etc.), is my “house” affiliation… I’m a Hufflepuff! 🙂

pottermore_w1

Most of you reading this will know immediately what I’m referring to… Hogwarts Houses from the Harry Potter book series. What I find interesting, though, are the number of people I’ve met recently who haven’t read the books. This seams VERY strange to me, considering the phenomenon that is the book series, the movie franchise, and the theme park. For dedicated Harry Potter fans like myself, there is also the incredible fandom that surrounds the stories that includes Wizard Wrock, Leaky Con (and other events like it), Pottermore, and the HPA (Harry Potter Alliance).

I fully understand that my geekdom is showing in a huge way right now, but backing away from those extremes, we still have a story that inspired a HUGE number of people to read, and eventually write. I know quite a few people who name J K Rowling among their favorite authors of all time, no matter what type of stories they read or write on a regular basis.

I bring all of this up now because I live in Florida, and this summer the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be expanding and I’M SO FREAKING EXCITED!!! (click the image below to go to a page with the newest videos about the expansion)

So… in lieu of a “serious” book related question this week… I’m giving you a video of what’s coming to the WWoHP, asking how my readership is sorted. 🙂 So… if you know, comment below with your house. If you don’t know… and are curious… there are many sorting quizzes on the internet (Here’s a quick & easy one, although the best and most definitive is through Pottermore, as it’s designed by Jo, herself.) Have you read the books? Seen the movies? (Yes, I’m going to be one of those people who says READ THE BOOKS, EVEN IF YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIES… there is SO much from the books missing in the movies.)

Have a little fun with me this week… let me know what house you’ve been sorted into, and whether you think you’ll be visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter this summer!!

I WONDER… Wednesday – Give Me My UF/PNR!!

It’s laaaaate on Wednesday, but it IS still Wednesday… so here goes…

I’ve heard the comment made a few times recently that “urban fantasy and paranormal romance are on their way out” as a genre. I’ve heard this from authors who have started exploring new genres in new work. I’ve heard “publishers aren’t buying new paranormals, unless they’re from an existing franchise”. I’ve heard it in the twitterverse, and more recently, at the RT Booklovers Convention. Some of the books I love, and ones that I WILL love when they’re released, are ALREADY in danger of low print runs, and print on demand only status.

THIS MAKES ME HAVE ALL THE SADS!!!

UF/PNR is about 90% of what I read. They’re the staple of my TBR and rec lists. They’re what make me have a happy face. I need my witches and dragons and vamps and weres!! Yes, I do enjoy some contemporary stories. But they’re usually by specific authors, and they’re usually read BETWEEN my paranormals, to help me clear out of one world before I start into another.  And if an author I love write BOTH paranormal AND contemp, well, that’s even better :-). HOWEVER… there is no replacing paranormals as my go-to genre for me.

I can’t be the only one who’s heard this… and I can’t be the only one who’s having palpitations because of it. What could POSSIBLY be causing publishers to veer from the genre?? I KNOW there are readers for the stories out there. I KNOW there are authors who want to share their magic with us. So what gives?? Is this a publishing cycle thing? Bloggers who review UF/PNR, will you start reviewing other genres, or will you hit the older stuff you may have missed?

I’d LOVE to hear from readers, authors, and industry peeps about whether these “UF/PNR is dying” murmers are true… and what the heck someone like me is supposed to do about it if they are. (This is NOT the way I intended to find time to get through my towering TBR pile!! I need NEW STUFF!!)

***One additional note… I run a CONVENTION that focuses ONLY on UF/PNR!!! I can just imagine all of us sitting at the bar of the Hilton in Daytona, crying over our various libations, wondering where all the new storytellers are!***

Ok… so… between Coastal Magic in February, my birthday in March, being sick, and my store closing… there has been a LOT going on in my real life. I admit to being a neglectful blog mommy, and I’m sorry. I’m working on catching up, and have some fun things coming soon. Which got me thinking… what do YOU all like best about a book blog? Are you looking for reviews? I love to share my thoughts, but they seem to get the lease amount of feedback from readers. Is there something in particular you’re looking for IN a review?? Do you like blog tours and promotional blasts? I KNOW contests are always a favorite, but do you ever get tired of a certain type of thing? What about cover reveals? Special features and guest posts?? What do YOU all want to see more of?? I’m looking to get back to a regular schedule, and I want to make the most of this space. Thanks for all your input!!

I’ve not posted anything on this blog since January 1st. I’m sad about that, but I have a good reason. I’m planning a convention!!! Just in case there are any of you reading this that didn’t know that… Coastal Magic Convention is my party baby, and the time is drawing near!!! *runs around with flaily arms*

CoastalMagicHeaderFB1 copy

So… this year’s event is pretty set, as far as activities and such, but I’m curious. What is YOUR favorite part of an author-reader-centric event? The signing? The swag? The panels? The other readers? Offsite activities? Location?

What makes an event a MUST DO for you? Maybe some of your suggestions will end up at Coastal Magic in 2015!! 🙂

Hope to see some of you there!!! (The signing is FREE and open to the public! Check out the website link above for the full author list.)
