I’m so excited to start off this new feature with one of my favorite authors!! Yasmine Galenorn has often talked online and in her acknowledgements about how important music is to her when she writes. Here’s a little more detail from her, and some links to check out a few of her inspirations.
Music plays a great part in my writing. While there are times I write in silence, for the most part, I write to music. Every book has a playlist from my ever-growing library of music. Most of the main characters have theme songs, as do both the Otherworld and the Indigo Court Series. As far as the genres of music—it varies. Darkwave, alternative, grunge, industrial goth, metal, and pagan/worldbeat tends to make up the majority of my listening experience. Once in awhile, a few Celtic songs will creep in there, a few classical pieces. I never listen to country/western and seldom to folk music. The first I don’t like at all, the second it too gentle for my tastes.
When I’m making a playlist—which happens before I begin writing the book—I focus on the brief synopsis I’ve written, and the mood that I’ve felt building for the book. I add songs as they catch my attention. Some songs will show up on every play list, others only on certain ones. The preliminary playlist will usually be between 5-7 hours long. As I dive into the writing, some songs will be deleted off of it, and others will be added.
